Gendered Assessment of Value Chain and Market Opportunities for Kenyan Seaweed: Agriculture and Other Avenues.
Date Issued: May 27, 2025
Closing Date: June 20, 2025
Cascadia Seaweed, under its Nature-based Solutions Division, is seeking expressions of interest from qualified organizations to conduct a comprehensive assessment on Kenya's agricultural market and on other market entry points for eucheumatoid seaweed value-added products.
This assessment will serve as a foundation for strategic decision-making related to seaweed-based product development and marketing investments, primarily focusing on biostimulants for farming applications and artisanal goods (e.g., foods, soaps, cosmetics) for consumer markets. The seaweed industry presents unique opportunities for women's economic empowerment in rural areas, as women play significant roles in seaweed farming and processing in Kenya.
Applications of this market assessment will seek to understand and maximize equitable opportunities in profitable sector growth.
This activity is a part of the Conservation and Sustainable Management of Coastal and Marine Ecosystems (COSME) Project. A four-year project seeking to scale up resilient livelihoods for women in the blue economy and improve coastal management at the community level, COSME is funded by Global Affairs Canada and implemented by Plan International in partnership with Cascadia Seaweed, the Jane Goodall Institute, and the seaweed sector stakeholders of Kenya.
Cascadia Nature-based Solutions is leading inclusive seaweed market systems design and spearheading a range of technical initiatives for the project to benefit rural Kenyan seaweed farmers. As a B Corp and Benefit Company, Cascadia Seaweed is committed to making a positive impact on people and the planet.
