Cascadia Seaweed Welcomes a Manager of Regional Business Development

For Immediate ReleaseOn the first anniversary of Cascadia Seaweed’s incorporation, we are proud to announce that our team continues to grow. Mairi Edgar has joined our team, as the third full time employee and as the Manager of Regional Business Development.
"I'm thrilled to be part of an enthusiastic team dedicated to developing the seaweed sector in B.C. while contributing to economic gains and ocean health in coastal communities" said Mairi.
Mairi has a Master's degree in Marine Management from Dalhousie University. She brings a background in Research & Development from the BC Salmon Farmers Association in Campbell River and technical experience from Creative Salmon in Tofino. Along with other relevant experience, Mairi brings a genuine interest in seaweed and growing this emerging sector.
As the Manager of Regional Business Development, Mairi will be responsible for developing a community engagement strategy — a project funded by the Provincial Ministry of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Contacts (FLNRO) and Nuu-chah-nulth Seafood Limited Partnership and implemented by Cascadia Seaweed.
To support the strategy she will develop a database of resources across Coastal BC by surveying industry stakeholders, specifically in coastal First Nations communities. This information will be used to develop Cascadia’s growth plans and to identify gaps which could impact the development of the sector.
Adding the position of Regional Business Development is very timely as communities everywhere look for innovative, sustainable and resilient opportunities to help with economic recovery. In addition to this position we have welcomed three summer co-op students to the team — a geographic information systems specialist, a graphic designer specializing in 3 dimensional modeling, and an engineer to design our nursery for seed production.
The next strategic hire for Cascadia Seaweed will be to add a Phycology Specialist to lead the ocean growth phase as Cascadia Seaweed grows to become one of the largest providers of cultivated seaweed in North America.
Cascadia Seaweed is growing to be one of the largest providers of cultivated seaweed, a climate-positive crop with a variety of uses requiring only sea and sunlight to grow. This British Columbia based corporation was founded in 2019 by four local maritime professionals who believe in building a profitable and scalable business that enhances the natural environment, reverses human impact on the oceans, and provides economic opportunity for rural and coastal communities.
