Whether working from a business location or home office, we often get caught up in the grind of our day to day to-do lists. The team at Cascadia Seaweed took a short break in the routine to reflect on the element that gives us life — water — on World Oceans Day, Tuesday June 8.
Cascadia Seaweed is growing to be the largest North American provider of ocean cultivated seaweed — a climate-positive crop with a variety of uses requiring only the sea and sunlight to grow. “When the tide goes out, the table is set” is an English translation of an Indigenous saying that refers to the rich coastal bounty the sea serves. But more than providing nutritious and delicious whole foods, algae (seaweeds are a group of algae) contributes 50% of the world’s oxygen to the atmosphere, sequesters significantly more carbon dioxide than land plants, help mitigate ocean acidification, can be used as an additive in livestock feed to reduce methane emissions, contains extracts which can be made into bio-packaging, pharmaceuticals, fabric and more.
Members of the Cascadia Seaweed team took part in an outdoor sign waving event over the lunch hour on World Oceans Day. The team held signs, smiled and waved at passing traffic, reminding folks of this important day and how the future of our ecosystems rely on a healthy ocean.
