Dr. Jennifer Clark shared with our team recently that the northeast Pacific Macrocystis that we cultivate, Macrocystis pyrifera, has had a name change. “Pacific Macrocystis had two ecotypes: integrifolia (strap holdfast) and pyrifera (cone holdfast) but has been considered one species because it was genetically indistinct. Recently, Gonzalez et al 2022 were able to distinguish genetic differences between NE Pacific Macrocystis and SE Pacific Macrocystis (Chilean) which had bigger genetic differences between the two hemispheres rather than between the two ecotypes. Due to this, it has now been officially renamed as Macrocystis tenuifolia. Rob Napoli, our CFO, attended the #MaRSClimateImpact event in Toronto last week. Among the highlights of this two day event was the panel discussion titled “Generational shift: Family offices and the pivot to climate investing.” As we look to commercialize solutions to mitigate climate change and the challenges resulting from it, it’s reasuring to hear from philanthropic investors who are prioritizing opportunities that put people and the planet at the forefront. The MaRS Discovery District has played a very valuable role in our business development. Through the cleantech ecosystem they have brought together, we have received invaluable advice from mentors and experts helping us hone our strategy, sharpen our pitches, and navigate regulatory processes. As seaweed, and in our case kelp, grows in the ocean it provides habitat, mitigates acidification, produces oxygen and captures carbon. A staggering 50–80% of global crop losses are attributed to adverse weather events and linked to abiotic (physical rather than biological) stress factors, such as drought, temperature changes and hypersalinity. In order to grow plants on land to meet the growing demand for food AND reduce the use of synthetic (chemical) fertilizers and pesticides, we must nurture our soils naturally. 👉Protecting genetic diversity is very important to us. We grow only native species and we collect our parent material (the seed stock) for each species within a 50km radius (usually much closer) of each of our different farm sites. Although this isn’t a regulated requirement, it is a very conservative practice. We also only collect the sorus or sporophylls (the reproductive tissue) of our parent stock which allow individuals to continue to grow, maintaining wild populations.
